CNC Machine Operator I

A CNC Machine Operator I performs functions such as loading, unloading, and adjusting the machine and equipment. The CNC Machine Operator I is responsible for producing machined parts, maintaining quality and safety standards, keeping records, and maintaining equipment and supplies. On-the-job training includes working under the direct supervision of a skilled operator and learning to recognize when the machine is operating efficiently and effectively. One measure of machine efficiency is run time, or the time it takes to produce a part. A measure of effectiveness is noted based on the quality of the product coming out of the machine. The amount of time spent working directly with a trainer varies and is dependent upon knowledge and skill level.


  • Abides by all Standard Operating Procedures and processes
  • Maintains safe operations by adhering to all safety procedures and regulations
  • Adheres to production standards and specifications and to quality assurance procedures
  • Plans machining by studying work orders, blueprints, engineering plans, materials, orthographic drawings, reference planes, locations of surfaces, and machining parameters; interpreting geometric dimensions and tolerances (GD&T)
  • Sets-up lathes by adjusting three- and four-jaw chucks, tools, attachments, and stops
  • Loads feed mechanism by lifting stock into position
  • Verifies settings by measuring positions, first-run part, and sample workpieces
  • Maintains specifications by observing grooving, cutting, including turning, facing, and thread chasing operations; taking measurements; detecting malfunctions; troubleshooting processes; adjusting and replacing worn tools
  • Maintains equipment by completing preventive maintenance requirements
  • Maintains required certifications
  • Inspects the machinery and product for quality assurance
  • Maintains continuity among work shifts by documenting and communicating actions, irregularities, and continuing needs
  • Documents actions by completing production and quality logs
  • Performing other work-related duties as assigned

Required Skills/Abilities

  • Ability to effectively operate a forklift
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills with the ability to comprehend direction in both written and verbal form
  • Proficient with using measuring devices
  • Outstanding organizational skills
  • Deftness and attention to detail
  • Basic math skills
  • Willingness to learn and grow

Education and Experience

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • One year experience preferred

Physical Requirements

  • Work is performed while standing and/or walking
  • Requires the ability to communicate effectively using speech, vision and hearing
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Requires the use of hands for simple grasping and fine manipulations
  • Requires bending, squatting, crawling, climbing, reaching
  • Requires the ability to lift, carry, push or pull medium weights frequently, and occasionally up to 100 pounds
  • Requires activities involving being around moving machinery, exposure to marked changes in temperature and humidity, and exposure to dust, fumes and gases


  • Range from $18-25/hour
